Update: The demolition work that had been announced to begin at the Interstate 5 and Avery Parkway interchange on the night of Wednesday, Dec. 9 is being rescheduled. The Orange County Transportation Authority is working with Caltrans and the contractor to determine a new date. Details will follow when a new time is set.
Project background:
The demolition work at Avery Parkway, which runs underneath the I-5 freeway, will set the stage for widening of the freeway and other improvements.
Overall, the I-5 South Improvement Project, led by the Orange County Transportation Authority in partnership with Caltrans, is improving the freeway between SR-73 and El Toro Road. The $595 million project through Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Mission Viejo and San Juan Capistrano, will add a regular lane in each direction and extend a second carpool lane between Alicia Parkway and El Toro Road.
The 6.5-mile stretch of the freeway is heavily traveled by approximately 360,000 drivers each day. Funding for the project comes from Measure M, the local half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements, also known as OC Go.
The improvements are being built in three segments and are expected to be finished in 2025.
