Bike to Work Week offers great prizes to get people and families safely rolling on a bike
ORANGE – Staying active is as important now as ever and residents need to continue moving in their daily lives, so the Orange County Transportation Authority is encouraging commuters and those working from home to consider rolling forward safely on a bike.
Bike to Work Week, traditionally held in May, is taking place this year Monday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 27.
Orange County residents are encouraged to bike to work during the upcoming work week, for better health and to help ease traffic congestion and take more cars off the road.
But understanding that more people are working remotely during the pandemic and aren’t making the commute to work, there are also alternate ways to participate. Residents are also encouraged to participate in challenges such as biking on a lunch break, going on a bike ride with family, or using a bike instead of hopping behind the wheel of a car to run errands.
“We know that these are challenging times for a lot of people, and we want to encourage good health always,” said OCTA Chairman Steve Jones, also the Mayor of Garden Grove. “Getting on a bike, whether it’s traveling the entire way to work or cycling with your kids around a local park, is a good way to travel and improve health at the same time.”
Those interested in participating are encouraged to visit www.octa.net/biketoworkweek and pledge to ride. Participants will be entered once for each day they participate. And weekend challenges are also available for those who want to increase their chances of winning prizes.
Those who pledge are entered to win prizes including a Trek 2 bicycle or a Saris Bones 2 bike rack that holds two bicycles. Prizes are provided thanks to sponsors, including Spectumotion and Jax Bicycle Centers.
OCTA also encourages cyclists to bike smart and stay safe. For bicycle safety tips, please visit www.octa.net/bike.
